Abby Walheim scored with 18 seconds to play, lifting Villa Maria Academy past Springfield-Delco, 9-8, in the District 1 Class AA championship today at Haverford High.
Villa Maria (21-1) won its second straight District 1 crown and will face District 12 runner-up Bonner-Prendergast in the first round of the PIAA tournament Tuesday. Springfield-Delco (16-6) will play District 11 champion Saucon Valley.
Walheim finished with three goals and an assist and Margie Carden had two goals and three assists while Sarah Delaney scored twice. Kyla Branco posted 7 saves in goal.
Belle Mastropietro led the Cougars with three goals and an assist and Erin Gormley scored twice.
