Staff Report

Philly’s own Matt Rambo – the league MVP – scored the tying goal with 21 seconds to play and then tallied the game-winner in overtime today in front of his hometown fans to give the Whipsnakes a dramatic 12-11 victory over Redwoods in the inaugural Premier Lacrosse League championship at Chester’s Talen Energy Field.

Rambo (La Salle College HS, Springside CHA assistant coach, Duke’s LC) led Whipsnakes with three goals and three assists and helped the regular season champs avoid a monumental comeback loss. Whipsnakes held a 9-2 lead in the third period when Redwoods stormed back and took an 11-10 lead with 1:36 left in regulation on a goal by Joe Walters.

Rambo – named the Jim Brown MVP for the league on Thursday – also was named the Championship game MVP.

Redwoods got a big game from faceoff specialist Greg Gurenlian (Springfield-Delco, Penn State), who won 13 of 23 draws and scooped eight groundballs.

Also for Whipsnakes, Bryce Young (St. Augustine Prep) had three groundballs and Brett Schmidt (Upper Dublin) added one GB to lead the defense.

Phillylacrosse will have more coverage later today.
