NCAA men’s D1: Moore, Schwenk, Aitken, Conner lead UVA; McNulty sparks Loyola to win

The No. 3 national seeded Virginia Cavaliers (14-3) upended the Robert Morris Colonials (9-8) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night, 19-10, at Klöckner Stadium. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cavaliers in the NCAA Tournament, their longest in program history.

Matt Moore (Garnet Valley) had two goals and a career-high seven assists and Justin Schwenk (Spring-Ford) came off the bench to win 22 of 28 faceoffs. Also, Dox Aitken (Haverford School) scored twice and Jeff Conner (Strath Haven) added two assists for the Cavs.

The Cavaliers received career nights from Mikey Herring and Ryan Conrad, two seniors playing their final career games at Klöckner Stadium. Herring scored a career-high six goals and Conrad scored a career-high five goals, as the duo was responsible for 11 of UVA’s 19 goals. Matt Moore also added a career-high seven assists and a career-high nine points.

Matt Schmidt (Central Bucks East) had two goals and two assists for Robert Morris and defenseman and fellow co-captain Mike Eveland had one caused turnover for RMU.

Other D1 playoff games

Loyola 15, Syracuse 13

LSM Ryan McNulty (Bishop Shanahan) had a goal, four groundballs and two caused turnovers and Dan Wigley (Shawnee-NJ) scored once for the Greyhounds.

Jacob Buttermore scored once and Jakob Phaup won 9 of 21 faceoffs for the Orange.
