From Press Release
Georgetown University Women’s Lacrosse Head Coach Ricky Fried announced the hiring of alum Kelyn Freedman (Radnor, Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year in 2010) and Katrina Geiger (Haverford High, Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year in 2012) as assistant coaches on Monday. Freedman comes to the Hilltop from George Washington University, while Geiger joins the staff from Elon University.
“I am thrilled to welcome Kelyn back to the Hilltop,” said Fried. “She returns invigorated through her other experiences which is always helpful, but also has an understanding of what it takes to succeed as a student-athlete at Georgetown. Kelyn’s ability to coach and teach either side of the ball is extremely valuable and her competitive nature combined with her ability to connect is exceptional.”
Freedman is no stranger to Georgetown as a two-time First Team All-BIG EAST midfielder for the Blue & Gray from 2011-14. The former team captain sits among the program leaders in points (120), goals (98) and draw controls (135). In her four years at Georgetown, Freedman played in 67 games with 41 starts. Her teams appeared in two NCAA Tournaments and as a senior she was named IWLCA Second Team All-South Region. The marketing and management major was also a member of the women’s basketball team her senior year graduating in 2014.
Freedman spent three seasons at George Washington working with the defense. In her time, two Colonials received postseason accolades as Jenna Oler was named to the Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie team and Jocelyn Donohue was chosen to play in the North-South Senior All-Star game. In the classroom, GW recorded a program-record 12th consecutive year as a member of the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll.
As an assistant coach at Niagara University, Freedman’s primary responsibility was coaching the defense and transition strategy and facilitating the development of players. Under her leadership in 2016, the Purple Eagles recorded the second-most wins in a season in program history, finishing the regular season at 9-8 before falling to Fairfield University in the first round of the MAAC Championship. Niagara also posted its first ever five-win season in MAAC play and improved from 12.6 GAA to 9.8 GAA.
Prior to coaching at Niagara, she was a member of the women’s basketball team for one season and graduated in 2016 with a Master of Science in Sports Management.
A native of Radnor, Freedman directed the Raider Lacrosse Camp in Philadelphia in addition to coaching with the STEPS lacrosse club. She also plays professionally with the Philadelphia Fire of the WPLL.
“I want to thank Ricky and Georgetown Athletics for giving me the opportunity to return to the Hilltop,” said Freedman. “I am excited to be a part of the program again and to help continue the success that they have had. Georgetown is a special place and I am lucky to have a hand in developing student-athletes on and off the field.”
“I am extremely happy that Katrina has decided to join our staff,” said Fried. “She was a terrific collegiate player and gained valuable experience this past year down at Elon. She brings a unique combination of athleticism and intelligence to the game that will be invaluable for our program. Her quiet confidence is only surpassed by her competitive nature.”
Geiger joins the Hoya staff from Elon University where she spent one season as an assistant coach. Last year, the Phoenix went 6-12 and 3-3 in the CAA. Geiger helped coach the CAA Rookie of the Year as well as two Second Team All-CAA honorees. She worked with both the offense and the goalkeeper to break a single-season record for saves.
Elon was Geiger’s first stop after an impressive career at Loyola (Md.) University. A midfielder with the Greyhounds, Geiger played in 73 games and made 58 starts. She finished her career with 34 goals and 29 assists for 63 points while collecting 102 ground balls and 61 draw controls to go with 54 caused turnovers. Along the way, Geiger was named a two-time All-Patriot League Second Team honoree in 2017 and 2018 and served as a team captain in 2016 and 2018. She played in the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.
A native of Drexel Hill, Geiger graduated from Loyola in 2016 with a degree in communications before completing her master’s degree at Loyola in emerging media.
Her coaching experience includes working with SEVEN Lacrosse Training along with Green Turtle Lacrosse Club as a head coach. Geiger is also still on the field playing professionally for the Philadelphia Fire of the WPLL.
“It is an honor to be named the assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Georgetown University,” said Geiger. “I am extremely humbled to join Ricky, Kelyn and the rest of the Georgetown staff. I have incredible respect for Ricky and his philosophies and am excited for the future.”
Freedman began last week and Geiger’s first official day is Monday, July 29.
“I am ecstatic about our new staff,” said Fried. “I am looking for them to bring new energy and ideas to our program to help us build on the success we have had, especially the last couple of years. I could not be more excited to welcome Kelyn and Katrina as the newest Hoya coaches.”
