From Press Release

The Delaware Valley University men’s lacrosse team defeated visiting Arcadia, 6-5, Friday night to earn first-year head coach Kevin Kohout his first NCAA victory and bring the Bucks-Mont Hammer back to Doylestown.

The two teams were playing in the fourth annual Bucks-Mont Hammer contest. DelVal had dropped its first two games under Kohout.

Arcadia (2-3) took a 5-4 third-period lead on two goals in 45 seconds. First, CJ Sherlock scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Tanner Pajakinas (Berks Catholic) before Josh Keitz took a feed from Ryan Mahon to put the Knights on top, 5-4, with 5:29 left in the third.

With just over a minute left in the third, Joran Smith (Quakertown) set up Dylan Brasch (Clearview Regional-NJ) and the junior let a quick shot go from seven yards out to tie the game at 5-5 going into the fourth.

In the final stanza, with 12 minutes to play in regulation, the Knights took a costly two minute un-releasable penalty for a cross-check to the helmet and the Aggies capitalized. Sophomore Brandon Keller picked the perfect moment for his first goal of the season as he took a pass from Brasch and ripped a low shot on goal that snuck its way through the keeper for the game-winning tally.

DelVal fended off nine shots on goal from the Knights in the final stanza to secure the 6-5 victory and the Bux-Mont hammer.

The Aggies were led by senior Smith, who finished with three goals and one helper for four points. Matt Waibel (Avon Grove) followed with a goal and two assist for three points and junior keeper Nic Brown made a career-high 25 saves in goal. Defensively, Sean Mylod grabbed a team-high five ground balls and caused two turnovers and Jerad Wilson finished with four ground balls with a pair of caused turnovers. Bryan Thompson was 8-for-13 on face-offs.

For Arcadia, Brady Manion (New Egypt, NJ) led the team with two points on two goals and Keitz grabbed six ground balls with one tally. Conor Cunningham was 5-for-8 on face-off opportunities and keeper Timmy Fyock made 14 saves.

It was the Knights that got on the board first as Manion scored 4:39 into the game.

The Aggies (1-2) answered just over two minutes later when P.J. Rafferty (Avon Grove) set up Waibel for his third goal of the season and a 1-1 game. With 3:32 left in the first quarter, Waibel fed Smith, who beat the keeper to give DelVal a 2-1 advantage.

Arcadia scored the next two goals and held the Aggies off the scoreboard in the second stanza to take a 3-2 lead into halftime.

Early in the third quarter the Knights were called for an illegal shot penalty and DelVal took advantage on the man-up opportunity as Smith found the back of the net for the second time in the game to knot the score at 3-3.

Shortly after, the Aggies earned another man-up situation and Smith cashed in again to put the home team back on top, 4-3.
