Bryan Rafferty, Owen Murray and Owen Mehok each scored two goals and Kyle Gucwa dished off five assists while Nic Pezone posted 11 saves as Bishop Shanahan defeated Strath Haven, 7-3, to claim its second straight District 1 Class AA championship today at Harriton.
The Eagles (18-1) will the District 2 runner-up (Crestwood or Scranton Prep) in the first round of the PIAA tournament Tuesday. Strath Haven (13-8) will meet District 3 third-place finisher York Catholic in the first round.
The Panthers led, 3-2, in the second period and the game was tied, 3-3, at halftime. But the Shanahan defense, led by Pezone, kept the Panthers off the board the rest of the way.
Mehok put the Eagles ahead, 4-3, four minutes into the third period and Vinny Riccardo made it 5-3 before Mehok and Murray also scored to make it 7-3 late in the third period. Gucwa assisted on all four goals.
