Megan Carney, Izzy Scane, Belle Smith and Caitlyn Wurzburger each scored three goals as the United States put forth a dominating effort in an 18-2 victory over England in pool play action Saturday at the 2019 World Lacrosse Women’s U19 World Championship in Peterborough, Ontario.
The U.S. improved to 2-0 at the tournament, setting up a showdown with Canada for the top seed in Pool A. Canada, also 2-0 after defeating Australia 7-5 on Saturday, stunned the U.S. in the gold medal game at the 2015 world championship in Scotland to end a string of four straight U.S. championships.

“We did some nice things in the first game, but I didn’t think we executed like we could,” said U.S. head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. “We really just want to get better every time we step on the field. We did that tonight and now have to regroup and have the same goal tomorrow.”
England opened up with a long possession early in the game, but Rachel Hall saved a free position shot to get the ball for the U.S. and Leah Holmes tallied a free position goal on the other end to get the U.S. offense going.
Wurzburger scored twice in the first quarter, both on assists from Kasey Choma, to help the U.S. to a 5-0 lead after the first 15 minutes and then Scane took over the second quarter. Scane, who had one of the U.S. goals in the first quarter, had two goals and two assists on the four U.S. goals in the second quarter.
The U.S. had a 15-9 advantage on draws with Maddie Jenner and Greta Stahl (Harriton grad, rising sophomore at Northwestern) in the circle and got great goaltending for the second straight night. Hall played the first half and made three saves while allowing just one goal and Madison Doucette (Unionville) made five saves in the second half while allowing just one goal.
Stahl had two assists, one draw control and one groundball.
The U.S. had assists on 12 of its 18 goals, with Choma leading the team with three. Scane, Stahl and Wurzburger each added two assists and the offense also got strong contributions from Sophia DiCenso and Holmes who both had two goals and an assist.
