From Press Releases

Sophomore attackers Ashley Lynch and Liz Trojan scored four goals each in Villanova’s 18-11 victory over Saint Joseph’s. Villanova is now 3-1 on the season and has won three consecutive games.

The Wildcats got out to a quick lead after sophomore attack Kim McDonough (Pennington, N.J.) won the draw and found midfielder Carlye Maita for a goal just eight seconds into the game. 25 seconds later, senior midfielder Devin Hassinger (Owen J. Roberts) found sophomore attack Liz Trojan for a goal to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

Saint Joseph’s answered with a goal of their own before Villanova scored three unanswered goals. Hassinger assisted Lynch for one, then Lynch found junior attack Jillian Swikart for a goal, followed by a goal from sophomore attack Katie Comerford, assisted by sophomore midfielder Grainger Rosati.

With a 5-1 lead, Villanova allowed a free position goal but answered back quickly with goals from Trojan and Swikart. The teams traded two goals each, Rosati and Trojan finding the back of the net for the Wildcats, bringing the score to an 8-4 Villanova lead with 14:47 left in the half.

Trojan scored her third goal of the game, followed by Lynch’s second goal of the game to give the Wildcats a commanding 10-4 lead. St. Joe’s followed up with a goal, but Comerford was able to put one in for Villanova to make it 11-5 Wildcats. The Hawks scored back to back goals for the first time in the half, but Lynch was able to bury her third goal of the game to give the Wildcats a 13-7 lead going into the half.

Villanova had 11 different players register a point in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Julia Michaels came up with seven saves in her 30 minutes in net. Despite the score difference, shots were 20-19 Wildcats at the half.

Villanova picked up right where they left off as Kim McDonough scored just one minute into the half. Trojan followed with her fourth goal of the day to put the Wildcats up 14-7. Playing a man up, Grainger Rosati scored for the second time in the game to give Villanova their biggest lead of the day at 15-7.

The Hawks made slight push scoring two goals in a row, but freshman attack Brittany Bruno stopped their run by scoring for Villanova. As the second half began to wind down, Ashley Lynch scored for her fourth time to put the game out of reach. Saint Joseph’s scored twice more and Hassinger netted a free possession shot as time expired to seal an 18-11 victory for the Wildcats.

Sophomore goalkeeper Khaia Baranowski (Camden Catholic) came up with seven saves as well in her 30 minutes in net in the second half.

Junior midfielder Sinead Brierley (pringside Chestnut Hill Academy) recorded her first collegiate hat trick and added a helper, all in the first half, to lead the Hawks in scoring with a single-game, career-high four points

Villanova Coach Julie Young had this to say following the victory, “We had so many different players score today; it was our best day on the attack so far. Both Julia and Khaia played strong in net making a ton of big saves at key points in the game. It was a great team win.”

West Chester 24, Jefferson 1

A total of 10 different players found the back of the net, led by Tatum Altman and Sami Barnett (Interboro), who each tallied four times, as host and 15th-ranked West Chester topped visiting Jefferson in a steady drizzle at Vonnie Gros Field.
