From Press Releases

The Ivy League has announced its weekly award winners in men’s lacrosse, and University of Pennsylvania senior attackman Kevin McGeary (Malvern Prep) has been named the Ivy League Player of the Week.

McGeary’s award comes on the heels of his standout performance in Penn’s 10-9 comeback win over then-No. 1 Duke on Saturday at Franklin Field. The senior scored three goals and added an assist in the contest, and figured in three of the final four goals as the Quakers made up a 9-6 deficit in the game’s final 8:21 to win. McGeary assisted on the tying goal with 3:07 to play, then scored the winner just seven seconds later. In addition, McGeary had a goal earlier in the week in Penn’s 13-6 loss at defending NCAA champion and current No. 2 Maryland.

For the season, McGeary leads Penn with eight goals and 10 points. For his career, the senior has 64 goals and 26 assists for exactly 100 points.

Penn (2-1) is ranked 13th in this week’s USILA national coaches poll and will host unranked Penn State on Saturday at 1 p.m.

St. Joe’s Adler is NEC Defensive Player of Week

After making 16 saves on 20 shots faced in SJU’s 4-3 loss at Providence on Saturday, St. Joseph’s men’s lacrosse redshirt freshman goalkeeper Mike Adler (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Saint Thomas Aquinas) has been selected the Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. The honors mark the first of Adler’s career.

In just his second collegiate game, Adler made 16 stops to take the Friars down to the wire; the redshirt freshman blanked Providence’s offense for the entirety of the second half until Sean Leahey scored the game-winner with 6:39 to play. 11 of his 16 saves came in the second and third quarters of play.

Adler and the Hawks (0-2) return to action next Wednesday, March 7 vs. St. John’s (2-1). Opening face-off is set for 7:00 p.m. on Sweeney Field.

BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week

Nick Testa, Villanova, Jr., GK (Rexford, N.Y.)

Villanova goalie Nick Testa repeats as the Defensive Player of the Week, the first repeat honoree of the season. Testa picked up his third win of the season on the road at Hofstra, a team who was receiving votes in both polls. He had 12 saves and allowed just two goals, the fewest scored by a Villanova opponent since April of 2008. Testa leads the league in saves per game with 11.00. The two goals scored by Hofstra are the fewest in the BIG EAST this year.
