From Press Release and Staff Reports
Ryan Brown scored six goals as the United States clinched the top seed out of the Blue Division with an 18-2 victory over Scotland in the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse Men’s World Championship in Netanya, Israel.
The United States improved to 4-0 and will complete its pool play schedule on Tuesday night against England at 6 p.m. local time. The game will be carried live on ESPNU at 11 a.m. Eastern time in the United States.
Canada downed the Iroquois Nationals 10-5 on Monday night and is the only team that could tie the U.S. in the Blue Division, but the U.S. would claim the head-to-head by virtue of Sunday’s 11-10 victory over Canada.
Scotland goalie Dean Stewart made two early saves and four in the first quarter to keep things close for awhile, but Brown scored two goals in the last three minutes of the opening quarter to complete a first quarter hat track and put the U.S. in front 5-0.
The U.S. scored seven times before Scotland got on the board on Sean Darroch’s goal with 7:30 remaining in the first half. The U.S. led 9-1 at the break and 10-2 after Scotland’s James McBride scored midway through the third quarter. The U.S. then scored the final eight goals of the game.
Brown, who now has 16 goals in just four games, also had a fourth quarter assist that was incorrectly credited to another U.S. player in the official stats.
The U.S. had assists on 14 of its 18 goals with Tom Schreiber (Princeton, 3g, 3a) and Jordan Wolf (Lower Merion, Duke’s LC, 1g, 3a) leading the team with three assists each. Ned Crotty, Marcus Holman and Drew Snider each scored two goals.
John Galloway made four saves to earn his fourth win of the tournament, and Greg Gurenlian (Springfield-Delco/Duke’s LC/Penn State, 6-of-10) and Trevor Baptiste (6-of-11) gave the U.S. a 12-9 advantage on faceoffs. Will Haus, who carried the flag out for the team to start the game, had a team-high five groundballs.
Canada 10, Iroquois Nation 5
A 24 save performance from goaltender Dillon Ward helped lead Canada to a 10-5 win over the Iroquois Nation (2-2) at the 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship in Netanya, Israel. The win earned Canada (3-1) a bye directly into the semi-finals.
The Iroquois outshot the Canadians 51-32, but Ward stood tall. He finished the game with an outstanding 0.83% save percentage, more than doubling the 0.41% of his counterpart Warren Hill.
He made an incredible 12 saves in the first quarter and didn’t let a ball by him until the 9:47 mark of the second quarter.
A trio of Canadians finished with three points, including a two goal, one assist performances from both Wes Berg and Mark Cockerton, and a one goal, two assist game from Josh Byrne
Curtis Dickson (Delaware) and Ben McIntosh (Drexel) chipped in with a pair of goals each, while Kevin Crowley (Shipley assistant coach, Fusion Co-Founder) added a single.
The Iroquois held possession for much of the game, thanks in large part to Jeremy Thompson winning 12 of 18 face-offs, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.
Canada plays their final game of the round-robin against Australia tomorrow, July 17, at 7:30am ET.
Finland 11, Norwway 9
Alex Kiviniemi (Hill School, PA Roughriders) had one assist for Finland.
Ireland 15, Italy 7
Conor Kelly (Haverford School) had six saves and Luke Palmadesso (Villanova) scored once for Ireland.
Puerto Rico 14, Germany 9
Lou Gonzalez (Dukes Nationals Director) had four goals and Desi Gonzalez (Emmaus coach, Dukes Nationals coach) had an assist for Puerto Rico.
