For the second consecutive year, the Cabrini men’s lacrosse team will welcome the Colorado College Tigers to Edith Robb Dixon Field for the NCAA Tournament opener. The Cavaliers and Tigers will meet in a second round game on Wednesday at 4pm.
Tickets for the game will go on sale on Wednesday afternoon at 3pm at the main entrance to Edith Robb Dixon Field. Adult tickets will cost $6, while tickets for seniors, students with college ID and children will cost $3. Children age two and under will be free.
The winner of Wednesday’s second round will face either No. 5 Wesleyan (14-3) or SUNY Cortland (12-6), who will also meet in Wednesday’s second round.
The No. 8 Cavaliers are making their 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance after winning their 18th straight Colonial States Athletic Conference championship on Saturday with a 17-7 victory over Gwynedd Mercy.
Junior Nicholas Waligurski (Berks Catholic) earned Most Valuable Player honors with three goals on three shots and a ground ball in the championship win.
Waliguski was one of eight Cavaliers to mark the scoring column on the day. Junior Timmy Brooks (Haverford School) netted four goals, while sophomore Ty Kostack (Marple Newtown) paired three goals and two assists. Junior Jordan Krug (Cherokee) paired two goals with a career high five assists, while sophomore Matt LoParo added two goals and two helpers.
Colorado College earned its sixth NCAA Tournament bid after posting a 13-1 overall record. Among the hottest teams in the nation, the Tigers enter Wednesday’s game riding a 13 game win streak, including a 14-10 victory over Whittier College in the 2018 Locker-Stabler Cup on April 28.
Trailing 2-1 with five minutes left in the first quarter, the Tigers netted four unanswered goals to end the period with a 5-2 lead. Colorado College added three straight goals in a span of 2:23 midway through the second to push its cushion to 8-3. Whittier pulled within 8-5 at the break, but the Poets would get no closer.
Five Tigers recorded north of three points in the win, with sophomore Coby Petau pairing five goals and an assist. Senior Robbie Stern and junior Tyler Borko netted three goals each, while junior Aaron Maslow and freshman John Sutro set up three each.
The Tigers dominated the faceoff X, winning 21 of the day’s 26 draws. Freshman PJ Offner recorded seven saves to earn the victory, while Drake Gillis caused three turnovers.
The Cavaliers outscored the Tigers 18-5 over the second and third quarters in last year’s NCAA Tournament meeting, en route to a 22-10 victory.
Eastern plays at Morrisville State on Tuesday
Morrisville State (11-7), the automatic qualifier for the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), will open tournament play in the first round Tuesday, May 8th on the campus of Salisbury University, against Eastern University. The opening face-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. tomorrow in Salisbury, Maryland.
Eastern claimed the MAC Freedom Title with a 17-14 defeat of Misericordia on Saturday, to enter the contest with a 12-6 overall record.
Morrisville State will be making their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament, after edging Bryn Athyn in a close 11-10 NEAC final to earn their fourth consecutive tournament title.
The seniors are one of the most decorated groups for the Mustangs to take the field, and is the first class to make four straight appearances, combining for a 31-1 NEAC record, and an 8-0 NEAC Tournament record.
Cabrini women open with No. 10 Washington and Lee
The Cabrini women’s lacrosse team will begin its 2018 NCAA Tournament experience with a trip to York, PA, as the Cavaliers will face No. 10 Washington & Lee University in Saturday’s first round.
Game time and ticket information have not been announced.
Saturday’s winner will advance to Sunday’s second round, where it will face No. 8 and pod host York College.
The Blue and White will make its 15th NCAA Tournament appearance and seventh in a row, after earning the Colonial States Athletic Conference’s automatic bid with Saturday’s 20-14 comeback win over Marywood in the CSAC championship.
Trailing 11-6 with just under five minutes to play in the first half, the Cavaliers turned the game around scored 13 of the nest 14 goals to build an insurmountable 19-12 lead with less than 10 minutes to play.
Junior Liz Hoeffner claimed her second consecutive Most Valuable Player honor after pairing eight second half goals and an assist. Classmate Avery Murphy (Archbishop Carroll) added six goals and a game-high 12 draw controls to join Hoeffner and Kelli Romano (2002) as the only Cavaliers to tally 100 points in a single season. Junior Emma Rodner-Tims (Bishop Shanahan) scored three goals, while sophomore Lauren Hughes (Methacton) and senior Jackie Neary (Kingsway Regional-NJ) notched three assists each.
