From Press Release
For the second year in a row, the Gettysburg Bullets traveled to Kerr Stadium in Salem, Virginia, and walked out Division III Women’s Lacrosse champions.
The Bullets topped Middlebury, 11-9, in a matchup of the past two years’ champions. Gettysburg held a slim 6-5 halftime lead, but extended it all the way to 11-6 in the second period. But the Panthers would not go away, trimming the deficit to 11-9 before running out of time.
Shawnee (N.J.) alum Liza Barr led the Gettysburg offense with five goals, including a hat trick in the first half, while goalie Bailey Pilder was outstanding with 12 saves.
Gettysburg is coached by Carol Cantele, a 1983 Gettysburg alum who graduated from the former Nether Providence High (now Strath Haven). In her 26th season as the head coach, Cantele is now 399-107, including three National titles.
The game, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, was delayed for nearly a day due to thunderstorm conditions in southwest Virginia. Neither team led by more than two goals at any point before intermission, and the stats were extremely even.
But Middlebury could not slow down Barr, who had scored a total of six goals in Gettysburg’s four previous postseason games.
“It was more about what my teammates were doing,” Barr, a sophomore, told Lacrosse Magazine. “They were just setting me up. Almost all my goals were assisted, so it wouldn’t have happened without them.”
