The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association released its 2017 USILA/Nike Division III Men’s Lacrosse All-America teams and Washington and Lee sophomore attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del./ Salesianum School) received third team honors.
Witherell received Third Team All-America accolades after setting a new W&L single-season scoring record during the 2017 campaign. He broke the record of 87 points held by Matt Dugan ’01 since the 2000 season. Witherell started all 17 games and finished with 88 points on 52 goals and 36 assists, and he also totaled 55 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers.
The 2017 ODAC Player of the Year and a First Team All-ODAC selection, Witherell tallied at least two points in every game this season, including posting a career-best eight points on three occasions. He also notched seven points in three contests as well.
Witherell was a Second Team All-ODAC selection and the ODAC Rookie of the Year following his rookie campaign. He will enter his junior season already tied for 24th on the school’s all-time scoring list with 143 points on 85 goals and 58 assists.
W&L has claimed at least one All-America selection in each of the last 11 seasons and the school has accumulated 191 total All-America citations since 1947.
Washington and Lee completed the 2017 season with a 10-7 overall record. The Generals earned a share of the ODAC regular-season title and were the top seed in the ODAC Tournament, before falling to Hampden-Sydney in the semifinals.
