Navy women’s lacrosse assistant coach Gabby Capuzzi (Atrchbishop carroll) will compete for Team Italy in the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in Guildford, England. The World Cup takes place at Surrey Sports Park from Wednesday, July 12 through Saturday, July 22.
“I am honored to be a part of the first ever Italian National Team competing at the World Cup,” Capuzzi said. “I cannot wait to get back out on the field and compete at the highest level against the best players in the world. It is exciting to think that this World Cup could set the stage for lacrosse to join the Olympics. I am very fortunate to be a part of something so incredible.”
The FIL Rathbones Women’s Lacrosse World Cup consists of teams representing 25 countries. The teams were divided into five pools. The seeding structure for the was calculated through use of placing positions from the 2013 World Cup. Nations who are playing in the World Cup for the first time have been placed based on previous results, geographic diversity, and their 2016 European Championship placing position.
Pools of teams are scheduled to play each other between the July 12-18 to determine seeds for the knockout rounds. The knockout stages culminate with the final on Saturday, July 22.
The World Cup begins with an opening ceremony on Wednesday, July 12, and officially kicks off with the first game of the tournament — England vs. Wales.
Italy is in Pool B and will compete against Haudenosaunee, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Switzerland during pool play. Capuzzi and Team Italy officially begin action in the World Cup on Thursday, July 13 against Team Hong Kong.
Capuzzi completed her third season as an assistant coach for the Midshipmen this season with a primary focus is on Navy’s defensive end. She was instrumental in Navy’s historic run to the Final Four, which saw the Mids’ defense keep some of the nation’s top offenses limited.
A former All-American, Capuzzi lettered from 2009-12 at Ohio State. She led the team with 42 goals, 52 draw controls, 38 ground balls and 31 caused turnovers in 2012 and set the Buckeyes record for career draws (166) after previously tying the single-season draw record in 2012 and owning two of the top three positions.
Capuzzi was a Second-Team All-Phillylacrosse.com selection for Carroll in 2008.
