The United States opened defense of its world championship with a 19-3 victory over Scotland at the 2017 FIL Rathbones World Cup in Guildford, England. A record 25 nations are competing in the World Cup, which dates to 1982 and has been played every four years since 1989.

Playing Scotland for the first time since a quarterfinal victory in the 2005 FIL World Cup in Annapolis Md., the U.S. got on the board just 56 seconds into the contest on a goal by Ally Carey and Kelly Rabil followed just 43 seconds later with another goal.

Scotland answered as Ailsa Stott took advantage of the U.S. team’s full-field ride and scored on an empty net to cut the lead to 2-1 less than three minutes into the contest.

The score remained that way for the next three minutes until Laura Zimmerman scored to start a five-goal U.S. run. After Scotland’s Mollie Maclean scored on another empty-net opportunity with 12:51 remaining in the first half to stop the run, the U.S. responded with the final six goals of the first half to take a 13-2 lead.

Scotland’s Jenni Aiton opened the second half scoring, but that was the last goal of the game for the Scots and the U.S. scored the final six goals of the game.

Rabil and Brooke Griffin each scored four goals for the U.S. while Marie McCool (Moorestown-NJ) and Kayla Treanor had hat tricks. Treanor had a game-high six points for the U.S., dishing out three assists to go along with her three goals. Michele Tumolo (Clearview Regional-NJ) had a goal and two assists.

Carey, a midfielder who helped the U.S. to a 14-10 advantage on draw controls in addition to her opening goal, was named the Player of the Match.

The U.S. will play its longtime rival Australia on Friday at 10 a.m. (Eastern). Australia, which fell to Canada 9-5 on Thursday, is the only other nation to have beaten the U.S. in World Cup play, and won world championships in 1986 and 2005. The U.S. has won each of the other seven World Cup titles.
