From US Lacrosse
The United States marched one step closer towards its goal of winning a third straight Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s World Cup with a 20-3 victory over Israel in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, England. It was the first meeting ever between the U.S. and Israel in the World Cup with Israel playing in the event for just the second time.
The U.S. will meet No. 4 seed and host England in Thursday’s semifinals. England defeated Wales 9-5 in the quarterfinal round. Australia and Canada will meet in the other semifinal.
On Wednesday, Taylor Cummings got the U.S. on the board less than a minute into the contest, but Israel battled early, keeping the score close at 2-2 more than nine minutes into the game. The U.S. then scored four straight goals before Israel’s Rachel Ozer scored with 15:34 left in the first half to make it 6-3. That was Israel’s final goal of the game as the U.S. closed on a 14-0 run.
Marie McCool (Moorestown), who had a great all-around game with a goal, an assist, two ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover, was named the Player of the Match.
Alex Aust and Kayla Treanor each had four goals and two assists and Michelle Tumolo (Clearview Regional) helped the U.S. offense go with six assists and a goal. The U.S. posted assists on 12 of its 20 goals in the game.
Cummings was dominant again on the draw, ending with eight draw controls to go along with a hat trick.
Thursday’s semifinal will be a rematch of perhaps the U.S. team’s most complete game of the tournament — an 18-1 victory over England on Saturday. Treanor had a record-breaking outing in that game with five goals and seven assists to set the U.S. team single game points mark in a World Cup game.
England, which took Canada to the wire in the final pool play game on Tuesday, also gave the U.S. a scare last fall. During the Team USA Fall Classic at US Lacrosse, England scored the first five goals of the game and led 8-7 at the half before the U.S. pulled away in the second half for a 20-13 victory.
