PEMBERTON, N.J. – Taylor Sweeney scored three goals and Jennifer Schuibbeo had a pair as Victory (PA/DE) defeated Hunterdon Storm (N.J.), 8-6, today to win the 2017 title at the Girls Summer Slam at Pemberton High.

Hunterdon Storm – which defeated Victory 8-6 in Pool Play on Saturday and entered the final with a 6-0 mark – took a quick 2-0 lead before Victory answered with four straight goals to take the lead for good.

“I’ve been playing with many of these girls on Victory since the 7th grade,” said Schuibbeo, of Kennett High. “We didn’t want to go out with a loss, so we can into the second half with more energy. We lost to them (on Saturday) and we didn’t want to lose to them again. It was our third game and we were really tired and we knew we had to win.

“I knew that this was going to be the final game of my travel career so I wanted to have a big game.”

Sweeney, A Sacred Heart commit from Kingsway (N.J.), and Schuibbeo each had two goals in the second half. Bailey McMaster, Catherine Tistan and Kimberly Riordan each scored once.

“It was a good weekend,” Victory coach Corinne Dries said. “This is the girls’ last hooray before they go into their senior season. It was an experience for them, as they’ve grown up through Victory.

“I told them at halftime, ‘Do you want to go out on top or look silly?’ And they stepped up from there and played the game that I’ve been teaching them for the past two-years.

Hunterdon opened the game with goals by Giles and Ava Boethig (two goals). Jackie Giles, Erin Pfreundschuh and Catalina Weber each scored in the second half.

“We have a lot of girls going DI, DII and some that are going DIII,” said Dries. “It means a lot to all of us to showcase our teams.”
