From Press Release

There was no championship at stake Sunday morning when Princeton’s men’s lacrosse team and the English national team got together for their final game at the National Sports Center in Lisbon, Portugal.

Still, each team had won one game in this series here, and being the ultra-competitive types that they are, each wanted to be the one to win what essentially became a best-of-three. Just before it was time to head home after a week in Portugal, it would be Princeton that came away with the win.

Gavin McBride (Haverford School) scored three goals and an assist, Michael Sowers (Upper Dublin) had a goal and three assists and Jon Levine (Hun School) made eight saves while allowing two first-half goals to lead Princeton to a 13-5 win over the English.

Princeton took control with 6-0 second quarter after it had been tied 2-2 at the end of the first. McBride scored two of his goals and Levine, the freshman from the nearby Hun School (nearby to Princeton, not nearby to Portugal), made six of his eight saves in the quarter. The run started with three goals in a 3:31 span, with a nice Bear Altemus goal, a nicer Bear Altemus feed to Riley Thompson and a powerful drive and shot by Adam Hardej sandwiched in between.

Thompson and Carter Flaig both had two goals and an assist.

McBride was Princeton’s leading scorer on the trip with eight goals and three assists, followed by Sowers, who had two goals and a team-best eight assists. Charlie Durbin also had a strong trip, with three goals and four assists to go along with 11 ground balls, which tied Jack O’Brien for team best.

After the third game, it was back to the hotel and then off to the airport for the flight back to New York.
