From Press Release
Senior Elyse Tierney scored a career-high seven goals to lead the host Swarthmore College women’s lacrosse team to a 19-12 victory over Cabrini in the team’s season opener on Friday.
Swarthmore got two quick goals in the opening minute and never looked back. Tierney wasted no time getting the Garnet on the board, as she won the opening draw control and scored 12 seconds later. Senior Elizabeth Bachman then doubled the lead at the 29:04 mark when the Garnet gained an extra possession off the ensuing draw off of Tierney’s goal.
Cabrini (0-3) sliced the lead in half when Bree Thomson scored on a free position attempt at 24:32, but the hosts responded by netting four straight in the middle of the frame to begin pulling away. Junior Lizzie Kolln netted three goals and freshman Kathryn Restrepo (Strath Haven) added her career marker during the stretch. A free position goal by Tierney with just two seconds on the clock gave the Garnet a 9-7 lead at the break.
The Cavaliers came out strong to start the second half and recorded three straight markers. Sarah Carzo most notably capitalized on a free position attempt to give the visitors their first lead at 10-9 with 26:48 left.
Swarthmore, however, got two straight goals from Tierney and never trailed the rest of the way. Tierney, Bachman and sophomore Briana Narzikul (Episcopal Academy) each contributed tallies down the stretch to produce the final outcome.
Junior Connie Bowen picked up the victory between the pipes for the Garnet by making 10 saves, while Megan Barlow of the Cavaliers suffered the loss after turning away 11 shots. Swarthmore won 19 of the 33 draw controls and Cabrini had a 19-15 advantage in ground balls as well as a 34-33 edge in total shots.
Sophomore Jess Breuning (St. Hubert) scored a career high five goals for the Cavaliers (0-3) and senior Melissa Scanzano (Haverford High) added three goals in the loss.
