The Bryn Athyn College director of athletics, Matthew Kennedy, announced today that former Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year and three-time Johns Hopkins All-American Tucker Durkin has been named the new head men’s lacrosse coach at Bryn Athyn College. He will begin his new role on January 4.
Kennedy commented, “We are very excited to name Tucker Durkin as our next head coach at Bryn Athyn College. Our student-athletes will benefit tremendously from his experience as a former Division I athlete at a high-end academic institution.”
Durkin – who helped lead La Salle to state championships in 2008 and 2009 and was the 2009 Phillylacrosse.com Player of the Year – attended Johns Hopkins where he started all 59 games over his four-year career. He was named the William C. Schmeisser Award winner for being the nation’s top defensemen in his junior and senior year. The three-time NCAA All-American, totaled 127 groundballs and causing 65 turnovers in his career at Johns Hopkins.
Durkin shared, “I couldn’t be more excited to join the Bryn Athyn College community and family as the new head coach of the men’s lacrosse program. Over the years, I have been extremely fortunate to have been mentored by some of the best lacrosse coaches and minds in the sport, who happen to be some of the finest individuals I know.”
“My hope is that I can share, not only my lacrosse skills, but some of the many qualities I have learned through my career that have benefited me on and off the field. I look forward to the 2016 season and the opportunity to help build a winning tradition with an institution that values integrity, honor and compassion.”
Durkin represented Team USA at the 2014 World Championships, where he was selected as the World’s Most Outstanding Defense and named to the All-World Team.
After playing at Johns Hopkins, he took his talents to the Major Lacrosse League. Durkin was the third overall pick in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Charlotte Hounds and was later acquired by the Hamilton Nationals. Durkin was named a 2013, 2014, and 2015 All-MLL Defenseman. He currently plays for the Florida Launch in the MLL. This past season, he played in all 14 games for the Launch.
At La Salle, Durkin was a two-time US Lacrosse All-America selection, an Under Armour All-American as a senior, a two-time Pennsylvania All-State selection and a three-time All-Catholic pick.
The Lions return a strong roster including, NEAC Offensive Player of the Year and NEAC Rookie of the Year winner, Nolan Frame. Bryn Athyn opens their season at Immaculata University on March 9, 2016.
