Women’s recruits: @PennStateWLax adds O’Donnell, Coyle, Mertz among Class of 2018

Penn State head lacrosse coach Missy Doherty has announced the additions of seven incoming freshmen who will represent the Class of 2018. The contingent is comprised of four midfielders, two defenders and a goalkeeper.

“This is an extremely diverse group of talent,” said Doherty. “We are looking forward to seeing them on the field for the next four years.”

Four standouts – McKenna Coyle (Kennett), Katie O’Donnell (Henderson), Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) and Maggie Kaulius (Severna Park, Md.) – garnered US Lacrosse All-America honors during their high school careers. In addition, O’Donnell, the Co-Player of the Year, broke the Pennsylvania state all-time goal record with 430 goals during her standout career at Henderson High School.

McKenna Coyle
Position: Goalkeeper
Hometown: Kennett Square, Pa.
High School: Kennett
Club Team: PA Express Orange

Four-year starter at Kennett High School … Garnered US Lacrosse High School All-America First-Team honors as a senior and honorable mention recognition as a junior … Three-time Ches-Mont All-League First Team member (2012-14) … Named to the all-league third team as a freshman in 2011 … Two-time team MVP (2012, 2014) … Served as team co-captain as a senior … Earned All-Southeastern Pennsylvania second-team honors from The Philadelphia Inquirer … Named team’s defensive player of the year in 2012 … Six-year starter for the PA Express Orange … Also competed with Philadelphia-area teams at three (2011-13) Women’s National Tournaments … Played on the Philly Under Armour Underclassmen All-Star Team in 2011 … Also played for the PA Express 2014 Orange.

Four-year member of Villa Maria Academy … Was teammates with Nittany Lion Cat Layne … Also played for PA Express.

Katie O’Donnell
Position: Midfield
Hometown: West Chester, Pa.

Four-year standout at Henderson High School … Broke the Pennsylvania state all-time goal record with 430 career goals (previous record held at 407) … Improved goal total, which included 133 markers as a senior, each season … Two-time US Lacrosse High School All-American (2013, 2014) … Earned First Team Ches-Mont All-League and all-area honors three straight seasons (2012-14) … As a senior and junior, earned All-Area Player of the Year honors by Daily Local News … Named to the all-league and all-area second teams as a freshman … Garnered Rookie of the Year Honors by the Pennsylvania Area Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association as a freshman … Participated in the Under Armour Underclass Tournament in 2013 … Also played for PA Express Orange.

Madison Day

Helped lead Leonardtown High School to four Southern Maryland Athletic Conference titles (2011-14) … Earned US Lacrosse High School Academic All-America, First Team All-County and Second Team All-SMAC accolades in 2013 … Named second-team all-county in 2012 … Earned one of Leonardtown’s Outstanding Player Awards in 2013 and 2014 … Earned a team’s Coaches Award in 2012 … Named team Rookie of the Year in 2011 … Also played for SPLAX for four years and DC Metro Team 1 in 2012.

Allie Dolder
