The Arcadia University men’s lacrosse team opened the 2014 campaign with a 13-6 non-conference victory over visiting Immaculata University Wednesday afternoon at Easton Field, giving first-year head coach Jim Stagnitta a win in his debut.

Arcadia never trailed in the game after scoring the first three goals of the contest. Sophomore attack Robert Palumbo (Staten Island, N.Y.) opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game off a feed from freshman attack Kenny Grant (Ridge, N.Y.), and sophomore Chris Jacovino (Hauppauge, N.Y.) made it a 2-0 game just over a minute later. Jacovino was hit with an illegal body check by sophomore defenseman John Abruzzo (Sewell, N.J.) as he scored, and the Knights took advantage of the man-up situation when Grant scored the first goal of his collegiate career with 9:37 left in the opening frame.

Senior midfielder Rocco Piliero (Downingtown East) got Immaculata on the board with a man-up goal of his own with 3:27 left in the first quarter, but Arcadia then scored four in a row to take a 7-1 lead with 5:46 left in the second quarter. Freshman midfielder James Boland (Hillsborough, N.J.) scored three of the four goals in that surge, the first of his collegiate career.

Arcadia led 8-2 at the half and put the game away by outscoring the Mighty Macs 3-1 in the third to open an 11-3 margin heading into the final period. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Griffo (Staten Island, N.Y.) opened the third quarter scoring three minutes into the frame, while Palumbo and Jacovino added one goal each.

Jacovio finished the game with three goals and three assists, while Boland has three goals and two helpers while winning eight of his 12 faceoffs in the game. Grant netted two goals with three assists, while Griffo had one goal and three assists. Palumbo also finished the game with a pair of goals.

Sophomore goalie Cory Sonderschafer (Central Bucks South) made nine saves while allowing just four goals in 55:53 to earn the win in net for the Knights, while freshman goalie Jordan Culichia (Pittsburgh, Pa.) allowed two goals with one stop in the final 4:07 of the game. Freshman goalie Brien Cullen (Abington) went the distance for Immaculata, making 13 saves.
