Philadelphia Freedom Lacrosse Club had a large crowd Tuesday as U.S. Naval Academy Head Coach Rick Sowell gave a 90-minute recruiting presentation.
The club hosted its annual event at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Exton. Coach Sowell’s coaching experience spans from Division I to Division III schools, Ivy League and currently at a military institution. It was a very informative session for all in attendance.
“Don’t send a 10 minute highlight tape it is probably too long” was one of the many Do’s and Don’ts that Coach Sowell reviewed with the audience. “Do include your jersey color, number, and other identifying marks like the ‘arrows’ or ‘circles’ around you in videos; Do include transcripts that are up to date.'”
Sowell also stressed what student-athletes should be focusing on in the classroom and on the field if currently committed, close to being committed or young enough to just be entering the process. “Continue to develop study and preparation habits to transition to college work,” he said. “Show academic growth from 9th to 10th grade, have fun, and work on the shortcomings in your game.”
Coach Sowell left those in attendance with a valuable list of key questions for Parents and Sons to ask college coaches during the recruiting process.
