Philly-based Smokey Joe’s Quakers won its second straight Super Grand Masters title last weekend at the 25th annual Lake Placid Summit Lacrosse Classic as Tommy Hannum was named MVP
Smokey Joe’s Quakers, comprised mostly of former Penn stars, defeated Koopers (MD), 9-8, Friday evening.
Hannum, the co-coach at Bayard Rustin and Phillylacrosse.com Coach of the Year at Downingtown West in 2012, led the attack and handled the face offs while goalie Chuck Leitner – the team’s organizer – added eight saves. Penn grads Zach Colburn, Gerry Burnes and Timmy Shur led the defense, which allowed only nine goals through three games before the title game.
“It’s great to win that bracket two years in a row,” Leitner (Penn, Class of 1981) told Lake Placid/Inside Lacrosse writer Casey Vock. “This is pretty much the same team we had last year coming back to defend our title. The bracket got more competitive. We had to play a lot of good teams along the way. It was fun to play against Koopers because it was really competitive. It was a great game.”
