Bryn Athyn College Director of Athletics Matthew Kennedy has named Johnny Mouradian as the new head coach of the Bryn Athyn College men’s lacrosse team.
Mouradian brings over two decades of lacrosse experience from the collegiate level to the professional level.
“We are very excited to welcome Johnny to Bryn Athyn College. He possesses the qualities we look for in our coaching staff. Johnny is a proven winner at every stop in his career, and has a long track record of developing players. This is an important time in our athletic history. We are entering NCAA DIII this fall, along with new membership in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. We needed to find a coaching staff that has the skill and experience to build this program into a contender.”
Mouradian is currently the general manager of the Philadelphia Wings. His National Lacrosse League experience as a general manager dates back to 1992 with the expansion of the Buffalo Bandits. During his time with the Bandits from 1992 to 1997 he won the league’s championship three times and made the playoffs every season. From 1999 to 2000, Mouradian joined the Toronto Rock, where the club won the championship in both seasons. Mouradian is the only general manager to win five championships.
In 2003, Mouradian was named the general manager and head coach to the expansion San Jose Stealth. He served as Head Coach for the 2004 and 2005 NLL season. In 2004 he was named NLL GM of the Year Award. In February 2008, Mouradian was inducted into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame. As a player, Mouradian played collegiate lacrosse at Ithaca College, and is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the 1978 Team Canada, which upset Team USA in the World Lacrosse Championships.
Mouradian is in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2001) as a member of the 1978 national team that won the World Field Championships in England, Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame (1998), Ithaca College Sports Hall of Fame (2000), Lakeport High School Hall of Fame (2003), National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame, St. Catharines, Ontario Sports Hall of Fame (2008) and Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2009) in the Field Player Category. In 2003, Mouradian was GM of the Year for the National Lacrosse League.
From 1986-92, Mouradian was the head men’s lacrosse coach at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario.
In 1974 Johnny played on the Canadian National Field Lacrosse Team (Melbourne Australia) and 1978 Canadian National Field Lacrosse team that captured the World Field Championships (Manchester, England). He was head coach of the 1985 Canadian National Team and assistant coach on four Canadian National Field lacrosse teams that participated at the World Championships 1982 Baltimore, 1986 Toronto, 1990 Perth, and 1998 Baltimore. Johnny was the GM of the Canadian National Field Lacrosse Team that won the Silver Medal at the World Field Championships at Manchester, England July 2010.
Mouradian was on the organizing committee that created the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships in 2003, GM of the Canadian National Indoor Lacrosse team that won the inaugural World Indoor Championship (2003). In 2007, Johnny was Chairman of the Canadian National Indoor Team that won the World Indoor Championship and GM of the Canadian National Indoor Lacrosse Team the won the World Games at Prague, May 2011. Currently, Johnny is Director of the Canadian National Indoor Lacrosse Program.
Mouradian earned his Bachelor of Science Degree, ’76 and Masters of Science Degree, ’98 at Ithaca College.
Along with the hiring of Mouradian as head coach, Bryn Athyn College is excited to have hired Joe Karpinski as the assistant coach to Mouradian. Karpinski joins the Bryn Athyn staff after spending the last six years coaching at Pennsylvania lacrosse power Downingtown East HS. He worked with the defense, goalies and face-offs. Karpinski grew up in upstate New York where he attended Hudson Valley Community College before transferring to University of New Haven where he excelled at long stick midfielder.
Kennedy commented on the addition of Karpinski, ” We are thrilled to have Joe joining our men’s lacrosse staff. He comes to Bryn Athyn with a tremendous amount of experience. He is a proven recruiter at a high-end academic college, and is a teacher of the game. There is no doubt in my mind that we have one of the top DIII coaching staffs in the region.”
Before coaching at Downingtown East, Karpinski assisted in building Ursinus College into a top Division III program. As recruiting coordinator for six years, he established a foundation for his players to grow both academically and athletically.
Karpinski is currently the General Manager of the Baggataway Lacrosse Club that excels in getting players into schools where they excel both on and off the field. He also is the Director of the Brian Dougherty Goalie School and the Philly Lacrosse Goalie School.
Johnny Mouradian hired Karpinski as Director of Operations three years ago for American Indoor Lacrosse Association. AILA works with players of all ages to integrate the indoor and outdoor game.
Karpinski also has a degree in Human Resources from Ursinus College and Special Education from Immaculata University.
