Eric Russo scored four goals, Will Schreiner made 17 saves and Avon Grove used a 6-0 run to spark a 9-6 victory over Central Bucks East in a District 1 quarterfinal today at Harriton.
The win advanced the fifth-seeded Devils (15-4) to the semifinals Tuesday at Henderson against today’s Penncrest-Springfield-Delco winner. Fourth-seeded CB East (17-4) will play a loser’s bracket game Tuesday.
The game was tied, 3-3, when Avon Grove took charge late in the second quarter. Russo started the blitz with 3:20 left and then Stephen Cyron scored with 20 seconds in the half and Tanner Peck (two goals) converted with seven seconds left.
The Devils kept the momentum to openthe third operiod as Russo scored twice and then Defenseman Danny Norris tallied his first career goal to make it 9-3 with 4:44 to play in the period.
Russo said his team is determined to repeat as District 1 champion, especially after failing to repeat as the Ches-Mont League champion. Also, he noted the win avenges a regular season loss to CB East (11-9 on April 12).
“After we lost that game (to Bishop Shanahan for the Ches-Mont title) it was a big shot to the heart and we want to get back and show everybody that we are better than how we performed in the regular season,” he said.
“Getting CB East was amazing. We circled this game when we saw the brackets and we wanted another chance.
“Today the defense stepped up big and Danny Norris scored his first goal ever. We played well on the GBs and got great goaltending by Will.”
Bryce Reid added a goal and two assists for Avon Grove. Matt Heim and Matt Milici scored for CB East.
“Today we played a little bit smarter as a team and trusted each other,” said AG coach Eric Jackson. “We always had the passion, but we played a little more complete game today.”
