The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has released its handbook for 2015-16 to Phillylacrosse.com and the news was not good for District 1 girls’ teams.
Due to rising numbers in the Pittsburgh area, District 7 will have one more state berth (three) while District 1 will lose one of its spots and now have five in the 16-team field. The only change for the boys’ bracket was also good for District 7, which will jump from two spots to three while District 3 loses its fourth spot.
The PIAA handbook also shows HersheyPark Stadium as the host site for the state finals, which will be held on Saturday, June 6.
The pairings and dates for the PIAA tourney will be released next week.
The brackets and state berths are set on two-year cycles. Melissa Mertz, assistant executive director of the PIAA, said that in two years there is a legitimate chance that the tournament will be expanded to a two-classification event with Class AA and AAA fields.
The PIAA handbook will be posted on the PIAA website in the next several weeks.
