From Press Release

On Friday, Nov. 7 the brand new Delaware Valley College Men’s Lacrosse Team, coached by Gary Mercadante, volunteered to glean a field of winter squash to be donated to Rolling Harvest, a nonprofit organization devoted to bringing fresh, healthy produce to food pantries.

Coach Mercadante decided to get the team involved in harvesting crops for a Thanksgiving donation because he thought if the whole team volunteered together it could make a greater impact.

“If 20 athletes volunteer for two hours, that’s 40 man hours,” said Mercadante, who wants to instill the importance of giving back in DelVal’s student athletes.

Cathy Snyder, executive director of Rolling Harvest Food Rescue was happy to have the help. “We work with small, local family farms, so to have so many gleaning volunteers at one time especially for all of this winter squash we’re picking to share with food pantries is such a wonderful, unexpected gift,” said Snyder. “We will start with nothing and in a matter of hours we will have more than 2,000 pounds of food to share with our neighbors for Thanksgiving distribution.”

The Hunger Nutrition Coalition of Bucks County, a county-wide coalition of hunger fighting partners, is working on a special distribution of fresh produce for the holidays. Contact Rolling Harvest Food Rescue to find out how to get involved.
