The U.S. Women’s National Team completed a record-breaking run at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup, defeating Canada 19-5 on Saturday to claim a seventh world title.
Katie Rowan (Syracuse University) provided the opening strike for the top-seeded U.S. squad just 1:21 into the contest, the first of eight goals for the eventual player of the match. After U.S. goals from Danielle Etrasco (Boston University) and Sarah Albrecht (Northwestern University), Canada’s Megan Takacs (Cal-Berkeley) put the host nation on the board, cutting the deficit to 3-1 at 23:43 in the first half. The second-seeded Canadians would get no closer, as Team USA responded with 11 of the game’s next 12 goals to take a commanding 14-2 lead into halftime.
Canada pulled within ten after goals from Mandy Friend (University of Richmond) and Kaylin Morissette (University of Louisville), but Rowan and the U.S. attack quickly engineered a five-goal run to ensure the victory.
The U.S. (7-0) topped Canada (5-2) for a second time in the tournament, having already defeated the first-time World Cup finalists 13-2 in a pool play match on Tuesday. Team USA is now 10-0 against Canada in World Cup play, outscoring the Canadians 141-31 in those contests. The U.S. had faced Australia in the last four World Cup finals dating back to 1993 before Canada topped the Aussies 11-7 in Friday’s semifinal round.
The US featured defenders Gina Oliver (Pottstown) and Holly McGarvie (Princeton, Shawnee).
Team USA peppered goalie Katie Donohoe (Monmouth University) with 23 first half shots, forcing the Canadians to switch to Kristen Hordy (University of North Carolina) late in the first frame. In addition to outshooting Canada 36-16, Team USA forced 11 of Canada’s 19 turnovers and held their opponent to 6-of-14 successful clearing opportunities.
Rowan (8g, 2a) set a new program record for goals in a game, besting Karen Yohannon’s 7 goals in 1989. With 67 career points in 14 games, Rowan tied Kelly Amonte Hiller for most points in U.S. history.
Katrina Dowd (Northwestern University) added three goals and three assists to push her tournament total to 36 points, trailing only teammate Lindsey Munday’s 37 in 2009. Dowd’s second goal at 2:14 in the first half vaulted her past U.S. record-holder Quinn Carney (2005) for most goals in a World Cup tournament. In what was her first World Cup tournament, Dowd finished with 26 goals.
Etrasco finished with three goals, while team captain Munday (Northwestern University) contributed one goal and two assists for the Americans. Caitlyn McFadden (University of Maryland) chipped in with two goals. Mandy Friend and Takacs finished with two goals each to lead Canada.
Team USA also set program and tournament records for goals (127), goals per game (18.0) and margin of victory (13.2) The tournament saw the Americans outscore their opponents by a combined 127-34. This win was Team USA’s seventh World Cup title, having reached the final in all nine World Cup tournaments.
