The Lehigh women’s lacrosse team was predicted fourth in the 2013 Patriot League Preseason Poll and two Mountain Hawks were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team, as announced Thursday morning. Senior Julie McBrien and sophomore Carli Sukonik (Harriton) both earned a spot on the inaugural Preseason All-League team after finishing first and third on the team in scoring a season ago.

The Mountain Hawks came in fourth place with 39 points. They were preceded by Navy with 65 points, Holy Cross (55), and Colgate (44). American, Lafayette and Bucknell followed Lehigh, rounding out the list with 38, 34, and 12 points respectively. The Mountain Hawks, who just missed the Patriot League Tournament a season ago, finished with a 7-9 overall record but have still made the league tournament in five of the last six years.

McBrien, a midfielder, finished third on the team last year with 36 points and second in both goals (24) and assists (12). She had five straight multi-point games to end the season and 11 for the year. She was also named a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree and won the team’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award at the annual end-of-year banquet.

Sukonik – the Honorable Mention Player of the Year in 2011 – had an impressive freshman campaign at attack, posting a team-high 41 goals and 47 points. She stood fifth in the Patriot League in goals per game and posted seven hat tricks, 10 multi-goal games and 11 multi-point games. She was also named a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree.

Lehigh tied for the second most players on the Preseason All-League team, along with Holy Cross, Colgate and American. Navy’s Jasmine DePompeo was named Offensive Player of the Year while Colgate’s Jennie Berglin earned Defensive Player of the Year laurels.

Three members of Lafayette were named to the All-Patriot League squad. Senior Addie Godfrey, junior Ana White (Strath Haven) and senior Rachel Martin were among the 15 players selected. Also on the Preseason All-Conference team is Colgate sophomore defender Jenna Frost (Strath Haven).

“We have an experienced group of core returners this year including three All-Patriot League players in Addie, Ana and Rachel,” head coach Alison Fisher said. “It is exciting to have these three recognized by the conference on the preseason team and we are looking very forward to starting a line up against Marist (2/16) that includes several upperclassmen mixed with some young talent from our freshmen class. Having three members of our team recognized in the preseason speaks to the potential this group has to be a contender this spring.”

The Leopards posted their first winning season since 2002 in 2012 with an overall mark of 9-8, just one game shy of making the Patriot League Tournament. Godfrey and White each earned First Team All-Patriot League honors last season, while Martin was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team.

Martin led the Leopards from the defensive end, while Godfrey finished the year with 59 goals and 68 points, offensively, and White added 26 goals and 56 points while leading the Patriot League in draw controls per game with 6.65. White is just 16 draw controls away from the Patriot League career record going into this season and was selected as the League Breakthrough Player of the Year by Inside Lacrosse.
