From Press Release

After a slow start, the No. 5 Cabrini College men’s lacrosse team found its stride, opening the 2013 season with an 18-12 win today over the visiting Haverford College Fords.

Junior Corey Elmer led the Cavaliers with a career day, totaling nine points on four goals and five assists. Sophomore Mike Leyden (Haverford High) tallied a career high four goals, while four Cavaliers added three points each.

Senior Henry Milson led the Fords (0-1) with four points on two goals and two assists. Junior Christian Clay (Lawrenceville School) and sophomore Geoff Geppert added three goals each. Freshman goaltender Eric Caliendo recorded a dozen saves for Haverford.

The Blue and White fell behind early as the Ford notched the game’s first two goals in the game’s opening 3:18. Sophomore Ethan Heisman (Henderson) scored the Cavaliers’ first goal of 2013 at the 6:28 mark. Just under two minutes later, fellow sophomore Anthony DiSanzo evened the score at 2-2. Another pair of Haverford goals came 28 seconds apart to rebuild a two goal advantage. Cabrini goals by sophomore Ben Laffoon and DiSanzo in the final minute of the opening quarter leveled the score at 4-4 after the opening 15 minutes.

The Cavaliers took control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Fords 7-1. Leyden broke the tie with his first goal of the day just 1:42 into the period. A Haverford tied the score before the Blue and White ran off six unanswered goals. Leyden found the net at 6:33 and 5:49 of the second quarter before junior Joey Shallow (Lower Merion) scored his first goal with 4:16 left in the half.

Leyden recorded his fourth goal of the quarter with 3:16 on the clock, extending Cabrini’s lead to 9-5. Senior Bobby Thorp (Cherokee) added his first goal of the season with 2:52 to play. The Blue and White put an exclamation on the period when Elmer scored his first of the season just 24 seconds before the halftime break, sending Cabrini into the break leading 11-5.

Haverford tallied the first goal of the second half, but one minute later sophomore Damian Sobieski (Avon Grove) got the goal back with his first of 2013. A pair of Fords goals chipped away at the Blue and White advantage, cutting the lead to 12-8 with seven minutes remaining in the third period. Elmer added his second of the day at the 6:45 mark but the Fords controlled the subsequent face-off and turned it into a goal 10 seconds later. Elmer and Sobieski returned to the net late in the quarter to extend the Cavaliers lead back to six goals at 15-9 after three quarters.

Again, Haverford scored the period’s first tally. The Cavaliers responded five minutes later when senior Andrew Layne (Malvern Prep) scored his first of the season. After a Fords goal, Elmer’s fourth score of the afternoon put Cabrini up 17-11 with just under five minutes to play. Two minutes later Thorp’s second goal of the day closed the scoring for the Blue and White.

Thorp, Sobieski and DiSanzo each added an assists to their two goals on the day. Shallow served a pair of helpers with his goal. Laffoon and Layne also added an assist to their goals in the win.

Senior goaltender Erick Zarzecki posted 14 saves in the victory.
