April 22, 2013 by Chris Goldberg

It had been nine years since Archbishop Carroll had beaten Springfield-Delco in girls’ lacrosse.

So, today’s 11-8 victory over the Central League power was indeed a big victory for the Patriots (8-3).

“The girls really came together,” said Carroll coach Lorraine Beers. “The defense as a whole really stepped it up.”

The Patriots trailed, 7-5, at halftime, and allowed just one goal in the fourth period to the Cougars (9-2).

Taryn Deck, who had five goals, drew Carroll within 7-6 and Natalie Schmitt tied it, 7-7 before Deck put the Pats ahead with 14:53 to play. Ali Gormley tied it for Springfield, but Isabelle Schmitt put Carroll ahead to stay and Deck scored an insurance goal with 7:00 to play.

Junior goalie Sophia Cuzzupe was a standout for the Pats, posting 13 saves. Freshman Meghan Matey added two goals and Margaret Filippelli had a goal and an assist and superb defense along with Megan Santoleri and Sarah Jeffers.

Gormley, Alex Poplawski and Taylor DeBernardi each had two goals for the Cougars.
