Stephanie Markunas, an All-Mid-Atlantic Region choice last year for Temple University, has been named the top assistant coach for Harriton High.
Markunas, a Ridley grad, was a 2012 Atlantic 10 First Team selection when she collected 30 goals and 25 assists for a team-best 55 total points. Her 25 assists tie for ninth all-time in a single season at Temple, while her 47 draw controls rank sixth all-time in a single season.
Among other highlights in an impressive season, Markunas scored five goals while tallying five assists in a win at Lafayette, and those 10 points rank in a tie for sixth all-time at Temple in a single game. On April 9, Markunas was named the A-10 Player of the Week after notching her fourth hat trick of the season. She finished the season with six hat tricks overall, and scored four goals or more goals on three of those occasions.
Markunas also was selected to the IWLCA North-South All-Star game held in June at United Sports in Downingtown.
At Harriton she will serve as Head JV Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach to head coach George Dick working with the attack and on draws. The Rams advanced to the District 1 semifinals and then the PIAA quarterfinals last year before bowing to eventual state champion Garnet Valley by one goal. Harriton posted a 20-5 record.
“We are very excited to add someone of Steph’s caliber to our staff,” said Dick. “Here ability to relate to the girls and her technical knowledge on offense and draws will be invaluable as we compete in the always tough Central League.
