Malvern Prep dominated from the start and claimed a 16-3 victory today over visiting Germantown Academy, clinching outright the Inter-Ac League boys’ lacrosse championship.

The top-ranked Friars (14-1) finished the league season 8-1, one loss ahead of Episcopal Academy – an 11-6 loser today to Haverford School.

Malvern Prep’s title is its first since 2010 when it shared the crown with Haverford School. The Friars last won it outright in 2008.

Head coach John McEvoy, who resigned the post after the 2009 season to spend more time with his family before returning to the bench this year, said his team’s work ethic was the key.

“We had a lot of motivated kids,” he said. “They play hard and they play gritty.

“I am very proud of them, and proud of how they have represented Malvern Prep. They had a lot to live up to and they bought into what we asked them to do.”

Chris Hilburn and Joe Dunn each had three goals and two assists and Charles Kelly won 17 of 19 face-offs for the Friars. Ryan Hilburn and AJ Traynor each added two goals while Eddie McLoughlin had a goal and two assists and Connor Glancy and Adam Goldner had a goal and one assist. Mick Horrocks, Tommy O’Connor and Sean Irvine each scored once.

Matt Barrett and Carson Cocco each posted five saves in goal.
