From Press Release
Lehigh women’s lacrosse junior Julie McBrien and freshman Carli Sukonik (Harriton) have earned their first-career Patriot League weekly awards, as announced Monday. McBrien was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week while Sukonik earned Rookie of the Week laurels after the squad went 1-1 last week, capped off by Saturday’s 11-9 win over Robert Morris.
McBrien enjoyed a strong defensive week, finishing with four points, two groundballs, three draw controls and a team-high five caused turnovers. She began with two groundballs, a draw control and two caused turnovers against undefeated Temple, helping hold the Owls scoreless for the game’s final 21:19. McBrien then played a crucial role in Saturday’s win against Robert Morris, posting three points while tying a career-high three caused turnovers. For the season, the co-captain is third on the team with eight points (four goals, four assists) while leading the way with seven caused turnovers.
Meanwhile, Sukonik used a strong game against the Colonials Saturday to earn her Rookie of the Week. She finished the week with three points while adding three groundballs, six draw controls and a caused turnover. The highlight came Saturday when she posted six draw controls, tying for the most by any Lehigh player over the last six seasons. Sukonik also scored a pair of crucial goals, making it 7-4 after Robert Morris pulled within 5-4. That gave the Mountain Hawks some much-needed breathing room on the way to their second win of the year. For the season, Sukonik is fourth on the team with six points (four goals, two assists) and third in goals. She is also second with nine draw controls.
Lehigh will return to action Tuesday when it travels to #2 North Carolina to face the Tar Heels. Opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
