Women’s recruits: Penn announces 10 newcomers for 2012-13 season

For the sixth season in a row, Penn will enter the women’s lacrosse season as defending Ivy League champions – a distinction which as the Quakers in possession of the nation’s longest run of consecutive conference titles.

Karin Brower Corbett will add 10 players to her squad for the 2013 season, bringing nine freshmen to University City and adding a transfer with extensive college experience. This class, which features six high school All-Americans and five players named by ESPN Rise as Top-100 players, was recently ranked No. 10 in the country by Inside Lacrosse.

“We are very excited about the addition of these 10 players to the Penn program,” head coach Karin Brower Corbett said. “They embody everything we look for in a Quaker – dynamic, smart players who can contribute in many ways and are just as successful off the field. We cannot wait for them to arrive on campus and start their careers.”

Depth has been added all over the field for the Quakers, with four players listed primarily as midfielders – and another two combo midfielders who can move around the field as needed, two as goalkeepers, and one each on defense and attack. Three players will come to Penn from New York, two each from New Jersey and Pennsylvania, while Connecticut, Maryland and Massachusetts each have one player set to suit up for the Red and Blue.

Nina Corcoran – M
Point Lookout, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy

Coach Corbett on Nina: “Nina has great game sense and really understands the game. She has terrific height and speed to match. She has tremendous instincts, especially on the defensive end of the field, however her speed and stick work will have her competing for a position in the midfield.”

Coach Corbett on Catherine: “Catherine is the work horse of the class. She is that middie who owns the field between the 30’s. She is a ground ball queen and will out-hustle anyone. Her game sense and non-stop effort will have her competing for immediate playing time.”

Lucy Ferguson – GK
Montclair, N.J./Montclair (William & Mary)

2012 (William & Mary): Started all 17 games and was selected second-team All-CAA … Also named CAA All-Rookie Team … Ranked fourth nationally in total saves (172) and fifth in saves per game (10.12) … Led the conference in both categories … Saves total ranked tied for fourth on W&M’s single-season list… Ranked third in the CAA with a .457 save percentage … Recorded a single-game school record 23 saves in the season-ending win at Hofstra (4/22), also the high mark for most saves in a game by a player in the nation during the 2012 season … Honored as the CAA Co-Rookie of the Week on April 23 following the performance … Totaled 14 saves at Drexel (4/20)… Registered 14 saves against No. 5 Duke (2/8) in the season opener … Tallied 12 stops at Navy (2/15) … Posted 13 saves at Richmond (3/21) … Recorded 11 saves against No. 9 Penn State 3/25) … W&M Provost Award winner … Earned the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award.
