The U.S. women’s national team edged Australia, 12-11, today, coming back from a first-half deficit to defeat its archrival in the marquee game of US Lacrosse Stars & Stripes weekend at Palo Alto, Calif.
Midfielder Kelly Berger scored the game-winner on a free-position shot with 3:25 left, capping a game that featured five ties and three lead changes at Stanford’s Cagan Stadium. Just the day before, the Americans whipped the Aussies, 16-3.
Midfielder Sarah Bullard led the U.S. with three goals while attacker Lindsey Munday added one goal and five assists.
The Americans trailed, 5-2, but sacored four straight goals and later seized an 8-6 halftime lead.
Australia regained the lead with a three-goal surge, and later took an 11-10 lead. American attacker Michelle Tumolo (Clearview Regional, Syracuse) got the tying goal and then Berger gave the Americans the lead for good on a free position. Midfielder Katie Schwarzmann got the final draw control for the U.S.
The game served as a preview for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s World Cup, where the U.S. will defend its gold medal from 2009 against Australia and other opponents in Oshawa, Canada.
