From Press Releases

The La Salle women’s lacrosse team broke the program record for victories in a season by defeating Saint Joseph’s 11-3 during a steady rain on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

La Salle finished its 2012 campaign at 10-6 (3-4) with today’s tenth win, breaking the program-record of nine wins achieved in 2005 and 2010.

In addition, La Salle honored its eight graduating seniors, Rachel Baker, Lauren Bushby, Sara Ciaverelli, Megan Corliss (Archbishop Carroll), Melissa DiTomo (Archbishop Carroll), Allison Herman (North Penn), Nora McGurkin (Penn Charter) and Taylor Ruland, in a ceremony before their final game in an Explorer uniform.

Juniors Lauren McDermott (North Penn), Jackie Roebuck (Marple Newtown) and Melanie Sarcinello (Marple Newtown), as well as freshman Kelly Furman (Boyertown), each scored two goals for the Explorers. McGurkin added two assists.

Goalie Corliss, who graduates as the all-time saves leader in program history, made 11 saves. Saint Joseph’s three goals are the lowest number allowed by the La Salle defense all year.

Junior Jackie Donato (Bishop Shanahan) led the Explorers with two caused turnovers, while freshman Caitlyn Brostrand controlled two draws.

La Salle got on the board first after a McDermott goal at the 17:40 mark off a pass from McGurkin. Scoring stalled for nearly fifteen minutes until McDermott put another past the Hawks’ keeper with 14:43 before the half.

Saint Joseph’s countered off the draw less than 30 seconds later, but the Blue and Gold would outscore the Hawks 4-1 in the rest of the half to take a 6-2 lead at the break.

The Explorers held the Hawks to just one goal in the second half.

Goals by Ruland and freshman Claire Andrews rounded out the scoring for the Explorers.

Nora McGuire led the Hawks with two goals.

Delaware 13, George Mason 8

Chelsea Fay (Villa Maria Academy) and Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood) each had four goals to lead the Blue Hens to the victory in their season finale.

Emily Ellisen (Great Valley) had four goals for GM.
