From Press Release and Staff Report

Three coaches with strong ties to the Philly area – Kelly Barnes, Liz Martin and Jebb Chagan – have been named assistants at St. Joseph’s University women’s lacrosse under head coach Denise Roessler.

Kelly Barnes

The coaches are:

Kelly Barnes – Barnes led Radnor High to an undefeated season and the District 1 Class AAA championship in 2008 while being named Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year. She is a 2012 graduate of Georgetown where she earned All-American honors this past season and was a two-time All-Big East selection during her career. She was also named to the Big East All-Tournament Team in 2012 and was a two-time Regional All-American. Barnes was recently named to the 2012-14 U.S. Women’s National Lacrosse Team.

Liz Martin – Martin joins the Hawks after spending two years at Rutgers-Camden, including a stint last season as the head coach. She was the top assistant coach for five years at Delaware and has also coached at Marist and at Temple, her alma mater. An All-American at Temple, Martin was part of three Atlantic 10 champion and NCAA Tournament teams there.

Martin’s first coaching position was at Temple under Kim Ciarrocca in 2005. Martin then worked as an assistant at Marist College. Martin coached the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and two other all-conference performers.

In 2006, Martin was named the University of Delaware’s top assistant as part of a staff led by her collegiate Head Coach Kim Ciarrocca. In her five seasons as Ciarrocca’s top assistant, Martin helped lead the Blue Hens to a combined record of 43-42. Delaware advanced to the league semifinals in 2007 and 2008 and to the finals in 2009.

A native of Collingswood, N.J. (Collingswood HS), Martin earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors as a sophomore in 2001 and as a junior in 2002 and was an IWLCA/US Lacrosse regional All-American her sophomore season. She earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team all three seasons that she played in it and was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player in both 2001 and 2002. Martin remains in the Temple records books with 155 ground balls (fifth) and 82 caused turnovers (third).

Jebb Chagan – Chagan, who will serve as the volunteer assistant, was the head women’s lacrosse coach at Villanova from 2006-11, where he recorded the most wins of any coach in the program’s history. A graduate of Widener, he was also the head coach at Chestnut Hill College for five seasons. Chagan had previously coached at SJU, as an assistant coach with both the women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer programs.
