Kristen Hansen scored the game-winner and Hallie Yancey made a key save with a minute left to help Strath Haven defeat Archbishop Carroll, 9-8, Wednesday in the first round of the girls’ Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs on Wednesday.

The victory advances the Panthers (15-9) into Saturday’s quarterfinals against Central league rival Conestoga, a 13-9 winner over Great Valley.

Hansen tallied the game-winner with 1:27 to play, but shortly after the draw Carroll’s Natalie Schmitt made an interception at midfield and went in alone on Yancey (eight saves).

Schmitt tried to beat her high, but Yancey made the clutch save. Soon, she made another stop on a shot by Margaret Filippelli.

“No one was on her and we were up by one so I knew that if the ball went in then it would have been tied and who would have known what would have happened,” said Yancey of the stop on Schmitt. “It’s a pretty hard save because I have no idea where it’s going to go.”

Laura Rowan and Lexi Mazur each scored twice for Strath Haven. Morgan Glassford, Sara Labrum and Kristen Wilhelmsen also added goals. Wilhelmsen and Glassford had one assist apiece.

“Now that we got our one game we’re just going to keep moving forward, and I definitely think that we can make it all the way,” said Hansen. “So this gives us momentum. It gives us a good fighting chance, and at least two more practices together.”

Rachel Flynn led Carroll with two goals and an assist. Kerry Newby also scored twice. Natalie Schmitt, Isabelle Schmitt and Gabbi Hull each had one goal. Megan Santoleri, and Margaret Filippelli had one assist apiece.

“Yeah, that was tough,” said Carroll head coach Lorraine Beers. “I feel bad for the seniors. We had a great senior class.

“They worked their hearts out. It’s never easy. You want to go all the way. It’s sad, they worked so hard.”

Katie Boyle had six saves for Carroll.
