Philly HS schedules for 2013: State runner-up La Salle has many highlights on its slate

Defending Catholic League and District 12 champion La Salle, last year’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association boys’ lacrosse runner-up, released its schedule for 2013.

There are many highlights on the slate. the Explorers open on Saturday, March 23 at the University of Maryland vs. DeMatha in an annual Fallen Heroes benefit game to honor the memory of 1st Lt. Travis Manion, USMC, a 1999 La Salle alum; and his best friend LT (SEAL) Brendan Looney, a DeMatha grad. The best friends were killed killed fighting the war on terror in the Middle East.

That contest is part of the 2nd annual LacrossePlayground.com Spring Classic, an event that also will feature Episcopal Academy and Penn Charter.

The stakes get higher the following week (Saturday, March 30) when the Explorers travel to Long Island to meet the consensus defending national champion, Garden City. The Trojans went undefeated last year and toppled then No. 1 Conestoga here in Philly at the Checking for Cancer Invitational.

The next game is on Tuesday, April 2 at Episcopal Academy, last year’s Inter-Ac invitational champion. Three days later, La Salle hosts MIAA power Gilman School.

Other key dates include April 19 at Conestoga, and a date on April 27 at the Katie Samson Festival with Haverford School. The biggest rivalry game is on Friday, May 3 when the Explorers travel to Fairmount Park to face Catholic League heavyweight St. Joseph’s Prep.

On May 9, La Salle host Radnor – a team that reached the state semifinals last year. La Salle closes its regular season at home on May 16 vs. South Jersey power St. Augustine Prep, a team that knocked off the Explorers in last year’s Checking for Cancer invite.
