Philly grads help High Point University raise nearly $2,000 for Habitat for Humanity

From Press Release and Staff Report

The High Point University men’s lacrosse team volunteered with Habitat for Humanity last Saturday and raised $1,905. The team – featuring six Philly grads – worked to landscape the driveway and curb and cleared construction materials from the work site of a new home for a High Point family.

“Working with Habitat for Humanity was a great way for our very fortunate group of guys to give back to the High Point community,” said head coach Jon Torpey, the former Philadelphia Wing and member of the Philadelphia Barrage. “Assistant coach Pat Tracy does a phenomenal job of getting our guys into the local community with these service projects and this was no exception. The team thoroughly enjoyed working with Habitat for Humanity and it is an experience they will take with them for the rest of their lives.”

The team helped clear away the old curb in order to make the driveway accessible. They also helped spread gravel and mulch and dug a trench for drainage pipes. They wrapped up the service project by clearing the backyard of construction waste and extra materials.

The men’s lacrosse team begins its inaugural season in the spring, but makes its debut in Fall Ball at the 6th annual Nick Colleluori Classic in October at Ridley high. The team has 16 players who were at High Point University last year, attending class and working with the coaching staff. There are also 22 newcomers on the 2013 roster.
