Penn State Abington names Wilderman (Penn) head women’s lacrosse coach

From Press Release and Staff Report

Eve Wilderman (Penn) has been hired as the Penn State Abington head women’s lacrosse coach effective immediately as announced today by Athletic Director Karen Weaver.

“I’m extremely excited for this opportunity to be a part of the Penn State Abington family,” said Wilderman, who formerly was an assistant coach at Harriton and Germantown Academy and coached the Philly JCC Maccabi team in 2010-11. “I’m ready to get started with the current team and push the student-athletes to be the best they can be on and off the field. I plan to continue from where Deb Andress left off and work toward the growth of not only the sport, but also the tradition and the culture here. It will take time to find and strengthen our identity, but we’ll pursue each step along the way to reach our goal of an NCAA playoff berth, especially now that we are an active Division III member.”

A 2005 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Wilderman spent the previous two seasons as the Assistant Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Bryn Mawr College, where she served as an Adjunct Physical Education Instructor, teaching fitness and wellness, and was the Special Assistant to the Athletic Director, supporting and coordinating many aspects of the Athletics Department at the college.

Prior to coaching, Wilderman was a member of the varsity women’s lacrosse team at Penn. Though limited by injury, she stayed on as the team manager in 2002 and 2003.

“My college experience helped me to relate to much of what our student-athletes manage, particularly the efforts required to balance both academic and athletic expectations,” she said. “As a former walk-on, I appreciate what can be attained through hard work and commitment.

“In this way, Penn Lacrosse also influenced my overall coaching philosophy. I value the impact of pushing individuals and the team to achieve incremental successes in order to accomplish a larger goal. I hope to instill a similar drive and passion at Penn State Abington.”

The Lady Lions were accepted as an active member of NCAA Division III and now will qualify for all NCAA post-season play and awards. In 2011, Abington finished the year with a 4-10 overall record and a 4-6 mark in the NEAC Conference, advancing to the conference playoffs for the first time in program history.
