Men’s lacrosse: Ursinus topples Widener, 14-8; Cabrini suffers heartbreaking loss to Dickinson

Ursinus freshman attack Mark Stratton (Manheim Township) scored five goals and added in an assist as the Bears opened up the 2012 season with a 14-8 win over Widener (0-2) Wednesday night in Collegeville.

Freshman midfielder Jake Weber (Manheim Township), senior Dave Kraus and sophomore midfielder Dylan Spangenberg (Malvern Prep) all had two goals in the win.

Widener was led by four goals from senior midfielder Ryan Shewell.

Leading 5-4 at the half, Ursinus outscored the Pride by a 9-3 mark in the second half including a 5-2 advantage in the fourth. Ursinus also picked up 42 ground balls and won 19 of the 26 faceoffs.

Individually, sophomore faceoff specialist Shawn Caven (Pennsbury) had a game-high 11 ground balls and went 16-for-21 from the X on faceoffs.

In goal, junior T.J. Magnani (St. Mark’s, DE) had eight saves in the win.

Ursinus embarks on a two-game road trip Saturday, taking on Messiah before heading to top-ranked Salisbury next Wednesday.

Dickinson 12, Cabrini 11

Sam Greenberg scored the game-winner with 6 seconds to play on a fast break as No. 13 Dickinson College edged host Cabrini.

Greenberg finished with four goals and Matt Cherry (Radnor) had a goal and two assists for the Devils (2-1).

Sophomore Matt Biegel (West Chester East) led Cabrini’s offense with five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Brian Hill (Ridley) recorded his second consecutive three goal game. Sophomore Corey Elmer and junior Bobby Thorp added two goals each for the 17th-ranked Cavaliers (1-1).

Senior John McSorley (Ridley) caused three turnovers and fellow senior Andrew Zelinski two. Freshman Anthony DiNenno (Avon Grove) won 11 of his 25 faceoff chances and secured five ground balls.

The trio of sophomore Brian Cannons and seniors Bobby Kingsley and Ward Gruppo tallied two goals each for Dickinson.

Stockton 14, Neumann 10

Sam Maldou (Sun Valley) led the Knights with four goals while Mike Pantalone netted three goals for the Knights (1-1) in their loss. Andrew Neubauer (Cardinal O’Hara) made 18 saves in net.

Franklin & Marshall 15, Gwynedd-Mercy 7

Kevin Kilpatrick (Salesianum School) scored twice and Scott Beury (Upper Dublin) led the defense with a groundball and caused turnover for F&M in its win.

Sophomore Nathan Pendleton (Cumberland Valley) had two goals for GM while Mason Risner (Hempfield) added a goal and an assist. Senior Nick Coan (Garnet Valley) added a pair of assists.
