The 1987 Marple Newtown High girls’ lacrosse team will celebrate its undefeated season and District 1 championship today with a special 25-year reunion when the Tigers host Avon Grove at 10 a.m. in a non-league girls’ game.
The 1987 squad, coached by JoAnn Yusko, defeated Central League rival Radnor in the district championship game.
Many of the players from the 1987 team and head coach Jo Ann Yusko will return to Marple Newtown to celebrate the anniversary of the perfect dream season. They also will present a custom-made bench and plaque to Carolyn Firkser, head coach of the 2012 Tigers.
According to a DelcoTimes article written by Harry Chaykun, also a staff writer for Phillylacrosse.com, 10 of the 12 starting players from the 1987 Marple Newtown team played lacrosse at Division I schools. Cynthia (Mathes) Howard was captain of the University of Virginia team that won the 1991 NCAA title, and her sister, Boo (Mathes) Shanks, also was a member of UVA’s 1991 team and was tournament MVP when Virginia again claimed the national crown in 1993, Chaykun reported.
Amy Reese helped Temple University earn the Division I national crown in 1988, the report said. Also, Meghan Mulqueen was an All-American at the University of Delaware and Monica (DiCandilo) Yeakel made the All-America team while playing at Loyola (Md.), was head coach at Maryland-Baltimore County for eight seasons and is back at Loyola as an assistant coach.
Chaykun reported that other players expected to attend the reunion are Carey (Videon) Garvey, who played at Lafayette, Susan (Trimble) Mueller, who was a four-year starter at Rutgers, Laurie Reezer (University of Vermont), Susan (Cook) Shine and Kelly (McGuigan) Ulmer (Loyola), Karen Boyd (Virginia Tech) and Jamie (Shulman) Weingartner (Delaware).
Yusko’s players said her overall record from 1980-93 was a standout 315-16-2.
