Katie Samson girls’ lacrosse: Villa Maria Academy deals Henderson its first loss; Fay hits 300-goal mark in defeat

It was a bittersweet morning Saturday for Henderson’s girls’ lacrosse team at the 12th annual Katie Samson Festival at Radnor.

Hednerson's Katelyn Fay (No. 14, front center) is honored by her teammates for reaching 300 career goals in Saturday's loss to Villa Maria Academy

The Warriors suffered their first loss of the year, 14-10, to Villa Maria Academy. But Warrior senior Katelyn Fay did reach a major milestone, scoring six goals and reaching the 300-goal career mark. Fay, who also has 91 career assists, is the school’s all-time leading scorer, male or female. Last year at Katie Samson Fay hit the 200-goal mark.

Fay’s heroics were not enough to stop the Hurricanes (8-6), who got four goals and four draw controls from Maddie McTigue, three goals from Jenna Mertz (six draw controls) and Catherine Bendinelli (two assists) and two goals from Megan Parsons (one assist).

“She’s worked hard on her shot,” said Henderson coach Kim Jackson. “Her biggest thing is her footwork and agility; she has that quick first step. She also has the maturity of not forcing it. She is not a ballhog; Kate’s closing in on 100 career assists and she should get that.”

Katie O’Donnell added three goals for the Warriors.
