Katie Samson girls’ lacrosse: Undefeated Great Valley handles Notre Dame Academy

Great Valley kicked off the 12th annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival this morning at Radnor by proving why it is one of the top-ranked teams in the state and the country.

The Patriots improved to 13-0 by toppling Inter-Ac League power Notre Dame, 18-7., behind five multiple-goal scorers. Brittany Edwards paced the Patriots with six tallies.

The contest looked to be evenly matched at the beginning, with the teams trading leads for the first 10 minutes. Great Valley, however, took the lead for good when sophomore attack Edwards scored at 14:46 of the first half.

That goal was part of an 11-0 run, capped by Ali Karwoski’s goal at 15:10 that made it 12-2. The spurt was broken by a goal from Notre Dame junior attack Nora McCallion at 18:59.

“I knew this was a big game for us; they’re a good team,” said Edwards. “It was awesome to get a big win like this, and to be such a big part of it. We all had fun out there.”

Avery Murphy added four goals for the Patriots and Kirsten Hale added three goals and an assist.

This was a humbling loss for the Irish of Notre Dame (9-2), which earlier this week suffered a tough one-goal defeat to Inter-Ac rival Episcopal Academy..

“We need to completely rebuild this team from the ground up, starting on Monday,” said ND coach Erin Cleary Cook. “We’ve had a really tough week this week, and everything we’ve built from the beginning of preseason has started to break down a little bit.”

Delaney Tuite led Notre Dame with three goals and an assist. kristen Bandos tallied three goals.

Coach Cook sounded hopeful for the rest of the season, however. “I’ve got a lot of really strong, really resilient girls, and I know that on Monday we’re going to rebuild and get back to where we were at the beginning of the season,” she said.
