Senior Iris Williamson scored five goals and became the all-time leading scorer for host Germantown Friends School today by reaching the 200-goal plateau as the host Tigers improved to 10-0 by defeating Hun School (N.J.), 17-11.
Williamson set the mark early in the game with her second tally and also finished with two assists. The old record of 196 goals was held by 2010 grad Betsy Sachs, who now plays at Bowdoin.
Williamson, who has committed to Penn, has 30 goals this year. She was unaware she had established the record until the game was stopped to make time for a special ceremony.
“When I broke it they called time out and everyone came around me,” she said. “I was confused; they had kept it a secret all day from me. I asked then, ‘What are you so excited about?’
“It was one of my goals in the beginning of the season to reach the record,” she added. “I know they were trying to set me up today. There have been some great scorers at GFS, and no one can break these records if it weren’t for the entire team.”
The Tigers, who sit in first place in the Friends Schools League, had other heroes. Isabella DiDio talled four goals, Sophie Mercuris had three goals and an assist, Annie Morrissey had three goals and two assists, while attacker Annie Tyson added two goals. Attacker Anna Bezahler gathered three draw controls off the line, which gave the momentum back to GFS in the second half.
The Tigers’ defense drew four charge calls, with Caroline Myran drawing two early in the game and setting the early tone. Myran also collected five ground balls and had one interception. Alex Clarke had a blocked shot and drew a charge on the crease, while fellow defender Caryn Miller had two draw controls and combined with Grayson Melby to clear the defensive zone under high pressure from Hun School.
Williamson said the Tigers have a goal to regain the league title and continue to win non-league games.
“Right from get-go we wrote down team goals,” said Williamson. “Of course we want to finish first and win champs and we want to get a great out-of-league record – which we’ve done successfully so far.
“We want to be the best we can and go into every game playing strong and smart.”
