Jamie Ikeda scored the game-winner 11 seconds into overtime today as Conestoga continued its miraculous end-of-the-game heroics by defeating host Boys’ Latin (Md.), 7-6, in Baltimore.

Yes, you read that right, Jamie Ikeda – the defenseman.

Ikeda, a Duke signee, scooped up a groundball off the overtime face-off and raced downfield before beating Colby Caplin for the tally that lifted the Pioneers – ranked No. 1 in the nation in three national polls – to 5-0.

Three of the Conestoga wins are now by one goal over national powers – two over MIAA heavyweights on their home turf. And each one has been as exciting as the last.

“I just picked it up and luckily nobody took me,” Ikeda said. “I had an open look and I took the shot.”

One of the heroes for Conestoga was junior goalie Robbie Zonino, who made 16 saves, and many key ones in the first half.

“It was sloppy at times, but the guys really came together at the right time,” said Conestoga coach Brian Samson. “And it was an incredible effort from Robbie today.

“He kept us in the first half. They definitely outshot us and he made some great saves. The guys didn’t give up and didn’t want to lose.”

Samson also credited face-off specialist Jared Jacobs.

“We kept fighting for groundballs and the last fourth-quarter face-offs were pretty successful, as well as the one in overtime,” Samson said. “We won four (face-offs) in the final period to get some extra possessions and the one in overtime was huge. Jamie made a heck of a play.”

This time the Pioneers tied the game in the third period, 5-5, on a goal by sophomore Pierre Atkinson, and then took the lead with 2 minutes to play in regulation on a goal by Tyler Brooke.

But no one said this would be easy as Ben Pridemore tied it with four seconds left for the 25th-ranked (in Lakers (7-2).

Ikeda, however, scooped up the groundball off the face-off and went right to goal, beating Caplin for the game-winner.

The Pioneers won their last game, 6-5, over Malvern Prep on a goal by Bradlee Lord with four seconds in regulation.

They took their first game, 11-10 over host Calvert Hall, when Lord scored the game-winner with 1:21 to play.

“I’m just happy we got out of here with a win,” Samson said. “I am happy for the boys. it could have gone either way; we were fortunate.” Game of the Week telecast:
