The Bayard Rustin boys’ lacrosse team sent 25 players and coaches to brave the icy waters of the Brandywine River on Saturday, Feb. 12 to participate in the 2012 Polar Plunge.

Bayard Rustin participated in the Brandywine Valley Association Plunge

The plunge, held at the Brandywine Picnic Park, raised money for the Brandywine Valley Association.

The water temperature was 43 degrees fahrenheit and the air temperature was right at the freezing point at 32 degrees with light snow falling.

The Brandywine Valley Association’s mission is to provides water protection and environmental education for the Brandywine Valley. The BVA has more than 800 members and is working to protect the picturesque and productive Brandywine Creek.

“We had a meeting back in November to brainstorm ideas for a community service project we could partake in,” said Bayard Rusin coach Jason Wolensky. “One of our seniors (Luke Hay) has taken part in the plunge before and immediately brought it to the team’s attention.

“The guys rallied around the idea and took it upon themselves to plan and implement the day. The BVA and sponsors did an excellent job of setting up the park for the event including a bonfire that kept us relatively warm. Chester County is our home and rising funds to help support a local organization for conservation purposes is something we were proud to help with.”
